There are several approaches you can take when buying an insurance cover for a household that has more than one car. The first approach would be to buy a different policy for each car in the household whereby each car has a different insurance cover, and in some cases you may even opt to buy policies from different insurance firms. The second approach would be to buy a single insurance policy which covers all the cars in the household. Each option has its strengths and drawbacks, and the best policy for a household depends on factors such as age of the drivers.
If you decide to buy a different policy for each vehicle in the household the two main policy choices are a restricted policy and a broad insurance policy. In a restricted policy, only drivers who are listed in the insurance cover policy are covered in case of an accident. That means if you have an accident in your sons car and you’re not listed in the policy the insurance will not compensate for the accident.
The main advantage of a restricted insurance policy is that it helps lowers insurance premiums. By only listing adults on an insurance cover, the premiums are significantly reduced since insurance premiums charged for teenagers are higher than those of adults.
A broad cover policy on the other hand covers accidents caused by any member of the household. This means that a car with a broad cover can be driven by any member of your household, and in case they get involved in an accident the insurance firm will cover the damages. The main disadvantage of a broad cover policy is that higher premiums are charged if there are young drivers in the household.
Buying an umbrella policy for all the vehicles in a household also has it benefits and setbacks. The main advantage of buying an umbrella policy is that insurance firms offer discounts as large as 15% on each cars premium. The amount of discount offered depends on the number of cars whereby a higher discount is offered for more cars.
While buying a single cover may lead to huge discounts it may also cause a huge financial strain in the household. Since one large premium is paid on the same time each year if it is paid by a single member of the household the lump-sum could be a huge financial load.
